What is an X-ray?
An X-ray is a medical testing procedure physicians use to create images of internal structures of the body. X-ray beams can pass entirely through the body, but this occurs differently depending on the density of the specific material and how much of the beam the body is absorbing. Dense materials will appear white while air in the lungs will appear black. Muscle, fat and organs appear in different shades of gray depending on density.
Why is it Used?
X-ray is the preferred technology in certain situations especially when bones or teeth are involved in the scanning. X-ray is the cheapest form of scanning versus MRI and CT. An X-ray is fast, only taking a few seconds for completion and X-ray is the most recommended technology for diagnosing breaks in bones and dental issues. Only bone and dense forms of tissue such as joints are visible using X-ray, so the scanning ability of X-ray is limited. However, when it comes to scanning bone or metal objects inside the body, X-ray scanning is preferable.
How To Prepare For an X-Ray Procedure
Patients will be asked to remove any clothing and accessories that cover their chest area, including jewelry or body piercings, before the chest X-ray procedure. They may be given a gown or cloth to wear during the exam. If the patient is pregnant or thinks they might be pregnant, it's important to inform their healthcare provider as the radiation exposure from X-rays can be harmful to a developing fetus.
What To Expect During and After an X-Ray
The healthcare provider or radiology technician will give the patient specific instructions on how to position their body for the X-ray. The patient may be asked to stand or sit in front of the X-ray machine, and the technician may ask them to hold their breath for a few seconds while the image is taken. The actual X-ray procedure usually takes only a few minutes, but the preparation and positioning may take longer.
After the procedure, the patient can resume normal activities unless otherwise instructed by their healthcare provider. The healthcare provider will review the results of the X-ray and discuss them with the patient during a follow-up appointment. Overall, a chest X-ray is a safe and non-invasive procedure that can provide valuable information about a patient's health. If the patient has any questions or concerns about the procedure, they should not hesitate to ask their healthcare provider or radiology technician.
