What is a Tdap Vaccine?
The Tdap vaccine is an injection that immunizes against tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (whooping cough) in adults and children aged 11 or older. The Tdap vaccine is recommended for pregnant women during every pregnancy, anyone in close contact with an infant under 12 months old, and healthcare professionals. One dose of Tdap is also recommended in place of the Td vaccine (better known as a ‘tetanus booster’) for anyone age 65 or older who has not yet received a Tdap vaccine.
What Can You Expect During a Tdap Vaccine?
Vaccines, like all medicines, have some chance of side effects, but most people who receive the Tdap vaccine do not report any problems. Among those who do experience issues following administration of the vaccine, the most commonly reported side effect was mild pain at the injection site that did not interfere with daily routine.
Before receiving a Tdap vaccine, it is important to tell your doctor if you have any severe allergies or have ever had an adverse reaction to any vaccine for tetanus, diphtheria or pertussis. You should also consult your doctor prior to getting the Tdap vaccine if you have seizures, Guillain Barre Syndrome, or if you feel sick on the day of your vaccine.
