Breast Implant Removal

Oftentimes breast implant removals are imperative to a patient’s health. There are a few reasons why breast implant removals may be required including the desire to change the shape or size of the breast, leakages, ruptures or hardening (capsular contraction). The breast implant removals surgical procedure is performed under either local or general anesthesia. The procedure itself typically takes 30 to 60 minutes. Patients typically go home shortly after the surgery. 

A small incision is made under the breast or sometimes around the areola. The skin pocket that is found around the implant itself is cut into and the implant is then removed. If it is a saline implant, the doctor may deflate it to make removal easier. If the implant is silicone, the doctor will inspect for any damage or leaking before removing it. This will help keep any of the solution from being absorbed by the body. 

The breasts are bandaged in gauze and placed in a surgical bra for the healing process. The gauze will be removed two or three days after surgery at the first post-op visit. The surgical bra will be worn about two weeks.
