About Steven Fendley, MD, FACS

Steven M. Fendley, M.D., FACS, is the senior partner and a general surgeon with Wiregrass Surgical in Dothan, AL, where he has practiced since 1989. A native of Auburn, AL, he received his undergraduate degree cum laude in Chemistry from Auburn University in 1980. In 1984, he graduated with his medical degree from the University of South Alabama College of Medicine where he was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society and was named the Outstanding Student in Surgery. Dr. Fendley then completed his internship and residency at the University of South Alabama Medical Center where he was three times awarded the “Best Resident” honor as voted on by the USA medical students.

Dr. Fendley is dedicated to his patients and continually strives to provide superior patient care by offering the latest advances in technology, accompanied by compassion and commitment to patient communication and surgical excellence. He has enjoyed leading the transition from open to laparoscopic general surgery, and more recently from laparoscopic to da Vinci robotic general surgery. The resulting improvement in surgical outcomes, including those seen by patients undergoing hernia, colon, reflux and bariatric (weight loss) procedures with the advanced technology of robotic surgery, has energized his practice, leading him to be among the top robotic surgeons in the United States. Dr. Fendley serves as a site mentor for Intuitive Surgical allowing him to teach other general surgeons about robotic surgery.

Dr. Fendley is certified by the American Board of Surgery and is currently an active member of the Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the Medical Association of the State of Alabama, the Houston County Medical Society, the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, and the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. He is affiliated with both Flowers Hospital and Dothan Surgery Center. In April, 2016, Dr. Fendley founded and serves as CEO of OperationServe, which is a local surgical ministry providing free outpatient surgery to those in our community with no ability to pay for surgical care.

Dr. Fendley and his wife of 30 years, Joyce Galla Fendley, have two daughters, Michaela and Madison. Michaela, a recent graduate of Auburn University is teaching middle school math and algebra at an inner city school in Dallas, Texas for Teach for America. Madison, is a junior at The University of Alabama, where she is double majoring in dance and political science. When not working, Dr. Fendley enjoys spending time with his family, fly fishing, playing guitar, traveling and doing community service through First United Methodist Church and OperationServe.
