About Frank Bohnenkamp, MD

Utilizing the latest technology and surgical protocols for the highest level of patient satisfaction!
Dr. Bohnenkamp is trained in robotic-arm assisted knee replacement technology to create 3D modeling of your unique anatomy for a totally personalized surgery plan!
Dr. Bohnenkamp completed his undergraduate studies at University of Iowa. He had an interest in mathematics, physics and engineering. His engineering studies led him to biomedical sciences. He followed a premed track and graduated with a bachelor of science degree in biomedical engineering and he graduated with Highest Distinction.

Dr. Bohnenkamp then attended the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago where his passion for anatomy and the musculoskeletal system was born. His rotation in orthopedic surgery unlocked the final pathway for his career by linking all of his interests. Orthopedic surgery not only required a sophisticated knowledge of anatomy but also required the surgeon to understand the biomechanics of the limb – especially when reconstructing joints or fixing fractures. After completing residency, he elected to pursue additional specialized training with a fellowship in complex hip and knee reconstruction at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. While there, he was able to participate in some of the most complex cases possible to enhance his skills. His extensive education has given him an advantage over other orthopedic surgeons in the field of joint replacements.

Dr. Bohnenkamp joined OrthoIllinois in October 2014. He specialized in total joint hip and knee reconstruction. He is one of the few surgeons in the area that is Board Certified and Fellowship trained to handle complex hip and knee reconstruction and revision procedures. He has performed several hundred revision procedures to correct failing total joint replacements for various reasons and thousands of primary joint replacements.

Dr. Bohnenkamp’s focus is on personalized health care. He treats each patient as an individual. There are a number of different treatment options preceding surgical intervention, however, he is up to date on the latest technologies and rapid recovery techniques.

Dr. Bohnenamp’s surgical technique allows for a rapid recovery. His mission is to restore pain free function and return to work and recreational activities as soon as possible after hip and knee replacement surgeries. This is possible because Dr. Bohnenkamp is specialized in minimally invasive, muscle sparing direct anterior hip replacements. He is the only one in the area offering not only a small bikini incision approach, but also fully automated hip replacements with computer and x-ray navigation to get perfect positioning of the implants to restore patient function. Similarly, he specializes in minimally invasive knee procedures including partial and total knee replacements utilizing computer navigation and modern techniques to minimize pain and restore function as soon as possible. All of his protocols lead to rapid recovery allowing a faster return to normal functioning, showering, driving without restrictions, and a decreased need for pain medications. Surgery can even be done in the outpatient setting allowing you to recover in the comfort of your own home.

Dr. Bohnenkamp is involved in peer review journal articles and education of future orthopedic surgeons. He is a member of a number of professional orthopedic surgeon organizations. He enjoys educating his patients, other physicians and the general public. In his free time, Dr. Bohnenkamp likes to spend time with his wife and daughter.
